When a guardianship order is due to expire OPG notifies the guardians and the local authority where the adult currently lives.
After reviewing our processes, a small change will come into effect from 9 February 2026.
Therefore, please note:
- For new guardianship orders, those registered from 9 February 2026, we will notify the relevant local authority six months before the expiry date of the order.
- For current guardianship orders, we will continue to notify the local authority within the last six months of the order.
We will continue to email our letter with the details of guardianship orders to the mailbox provided by the local authority. Local authorities wishing to make any updates to mailbox addresses or to the names of AWI designated contacts, please email opg@scotcourts.gov.uk
